East-West Healing Arts Institute is built on the premise that body, mind, and spirit form an interconnected, inseparable system, and that true healing can only take place when all three are addressed. That's why our logo is made up of the Chinese characters for these three concepts: body, mind, and spirit. Therapeutic massage and bodywork has been used for thousands of years as a powerful tool for healing, and can have a profound effect on the whole being of both the client and the practitioner.

Through the commitment and extraordinary experience of highly qualified instructors and through techniques that have proven effective healing agents over the centuries, this school is dedicated to training each student to integrate and utilize their entire being in helping others.

In practical terms, by employing structured learning sessions along with clinical experience, the student is able to practice treating patients while learning a professional demeanor and attitude.

The purpose of our institution is to assist students in broadening their knowledge of the diverse massage techniques available and to teach students to complement modern western medical knowledge with traditional eastern techniques.

What makes East-West Healing Arts Institute unique? Why should someone choose you?
Here at East-West Healing Arts Institute, students learn to build a truly holistic massage, developing expertise in TuiNa (Chinese medical massage) as well as in Western massage. Students gain an in-depth education in both the Western scientific view of the human body and classical Chinese healing philosophy.

Students also have the opportunity to practice and study their TuiNa techniques through our student internship in China where students gain clinical experience performing massage treatments under the supervision of Chinese doctors.

What is your philosophical approach to massage?
Everyone is unique and must be treated as so in order to enhance their healing process. Our philosophical approach to massage is to treat each body individually according to age and specific condition. By doing this, students truly succeed in healing the mind, body and soul together as a whole.

Each member of our staff brings years of teaching experience into the classroom. Their backgrounds include chiropractic, Oriental medicine and acupuncture, physical therapy, herbal medicine, TaiChi, along with a broad array of Eastern and Western styles of massage.

Massage is fast becoming a growing field enjoying a new found popularity in our ever increasing health and fitness culture. West*Wind Academy is dedicated to providing quality massage instruction in a warm and caring environment that fosters learning and growth.

If you are interested in finding out more information on massage therapy, either as a profession or for your own personal satisfaction, please feel free to call the Academy anytime during business hours.

West-Wind Academy of Massage Therapy
West*Wind Academy was started in 1985 by David Blakey. For David, it was the culmination of a dream that began in 1972, when he first became interested in massage while teaching school. He knew it was not a matter of if the school would ever get started, but when.
In 1981, that dream took one step closer to becoming a reality. David left the school system to become a massage therapist. After successfully establishing himself in the field of massage therapy for four years, and with the support of many of his colleagues, West*Wind Academy was opened.

About the Director
David Blakey received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Arizona State University and his Administrator’s Certificate and Counselor’s Endorsement from the Arizona Department of Education. He is a graduate of Mueller College of Massage in San Diego, California. His experience includes working as a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Arizona public school system. In addition, he has worked with the American Heart Association as a cardio-pulmonary instructor and with the American Red Cross as a first aid instructor and water safety instructor trainer.
Since 1981 David has had a flourishing massage therapy practice in the Valley; he has given numerous workshops and lectures in massage and massage-related areas though various organizations and colleges.
He is a member of the Arizona Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and holds a registered Massage Therapist Certificate with the AMTA. Furthermore, he is a dedicated educator who believes in helping people live their lives to the fullest through the fields of massage therapy and holistic education.

Licensing
West*Wind Academy of Massage Therapy is licensed by the Arizona State Board for Private Post-Secondary Education.

Philosophy of Doing Business
People have different ideas as to the best and most effective ways of operating a business. I personally subscribe to the old adage that you build a successful practice "one client at a time" and that "word of mouth is the best advertisement." In order to accomplish this, a therapist must possess a skill with his or her hands that will keep people coming back time and time again. Most clients will not pay between $40.00 - $60.00 per hour for a “rub down.” They want to feel changes in their body and a sense that they are making progress in obtaining optimum health. At West*Wind Academy, you will be taught a complete proven system of massage therapy that works. That to me is the bottom line. It's not the piece of paper one can hang on a wall but the actual skills one can take with them that will help make them successful.
At West*Wind Academy, you will be taught a complete, comprehensive system of massage therapy with an excellent track record along with a proven method that will help you build a loyal clientele. You will graduate with an actual salable skill, rather than simply walking away with a diploma to hang on your wall. These are the things that make a school successful and worth attending.
Since 1985, West*Wind Academy has been turning out highly qualified and skilled massage therapists. It has been this commitment to excellence that has helped build this school. I am proud to say that West*Wind Academy strives to maintain these high ideals.

Personality Traits Of a Successful Massage Therapist
In addition to learning a salable skill, the following personality traits are also very important:
Likes working with people on a one to one basis.
Enjoys working with one's hands as well as one's mind.
Receives personal satisfaction in helping people.

Distinctions of the West-Wind Massage Therapist Training Program
A course of study that teaches the student an already proven successful choreographed dance of hand movements, enabling him/her to maximize the therapeutic benefits of the massage.

In order to further enhance learning, students will have the opportunity to work together in small groups.
West-Wind believes that grades are not the most important outcome of learning. LEARNING is the most important outcome; therefore, to minimize the fear of failing and reduce unnecessary stress, our students are allowed to retake tests if they do not receive at least 80% mastery of the subject.

Here at the Academy, we believe that acquiring knowledge and skills is best accomplished in an informal atmosphere, where everyone can relax and enjoy the learning process.
Students study and come in contact with some of the best and most creative innovators in the field of massage and massage therapy.

All lectures and massages learned are videotaped. Students are allowed to view these tapes during business hours, either for review or make-up.

Numerous hand-outs designed to help students learn. these handouts include quizzes, chapter study guides, computerized tests. All handouts are for the students benefit in order to help them learn. Answers will be provided so students can check their progress.

Here at the Academy we favor a hands on approach to learning the massage. We believe that the only way to learn massage is to do it. Therefore, in the MASSAGE TECHNICIAN program, 50% of every class is lecture and 50% is hands on. After a two hour lecture the class divides in half for hands on learning. For one hour the first group of students practice their massage techniques on the other half; when the hour is up, the students switch roles. By taking turns at both giving and receiving massages, each student acquires a special sensitivity not other wise achieved. The MASSAGE THERAPIST program follows the same format with the only difference being that now the whole time is taken up with hands on.

The human body is a masterful piece of art. Unfortunately, most people know more about their car engine than their own body. we make learning anatomy fun as well as informative and practical. The desired outcomes of learning anatomy are:

The ability to apply this knowledge to the actual massage.
The ability to successfully complete any written exam that is required for obtaining a massage license (The majority of these questions deal in anatomy.)
Being sufficiently versed in medical terminology to work in a doctors office.
Obtaining a greater understanding of one's own body.

(8 month Diploma Program)

Massage Therapy is a profession in which the practitioner applies manual techniques, and may apply adjunctive therapies, with the intention of positively affecting the health and well being of the client. In recent years, the Massage Therapist profession has become indispensable to the health care field.

The objective of the Massage Therapist Program is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to qualify for entry-level positions in Massage Therapy.

This program will provide learning experiences, coordinated with the texts and clinical activities to enable graduates to obtain basic competency needed for employment as a Massage Therapist. Based on the natural instinct to touch in response to pain, massage is an ancient healing art being rediscovered for modern times.

This training program is divided into eight learning units called modules. Students must complete modules I, through VII. Upon successful completion of modules I through VII, students participate in 190 clock-hour Clinical Internship. Completion of the Massage Therapist Program is acknowledged by the awarding of a diploma. Program completion normally requires 32 weeks for full-time students.

Rain Star University in Arizona is broken up into three colleges and a clinic.

College of Oriental Medicine
Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is on the way to becoming the fastest growing healthcare profession in the 21st century. The College offers a unique program that integrates Oriental medicine with Western science, while promoting the integration of TCM into mainstream biomedicine. Our curriculum meets the highest standards, and our student clinic provides the community with affordable healthcare services while developing student skills. We are committed to excellence in teaching, patient care, and community service, based on the finest skills, latest technologies, and the highest ethical healthcare standards.

College of Therapeutic Massage
Massage has proven to be one of the fastest growing health care professions. Our therapeutic massage programs unite art, intuition, and science, while instilling sound business skills, to prepare graduates for a successful and rewarding career. Our curriculum meets the highest standards and our student clinic integrates classroom learning with hands-on life skills training. Employers seek our graduates for their skill, professionalism, and clinic experience. There is a high demand for RainStar graduates. We are not only committed to each student's success, but to the success of our graduates.

Job Opportunities
The Program is designed to prepare students for an endless variety of career opportunities. According to the AMTA, American Massage Therapy Association, massage therapists practice in a variety of settings, such as private offices or massage therapy clinics, chiropractors’ or doctors’ offices, holistic health clinics, health clubs and fitness centers, spas, nursing homes and hospitals, with sports teams, and sports medicine facilities. The variables one finds regarding specialization in the field of therapeutic massage include types of application, clientele, and technique.

Massage therapy has a broad number of applications. Its range includes relaxation, stress reduction, health promotion, pain management, injury recovery, and working with specific maladies. Practitioners may choose to focus on one of these areas. Another specialization factor is clientele. Some examples are athletes, the elderly, office workers, and performers (e.g., dancers). Another area of specialization is technique. Some practitioners focus on a particular technique and base their practice on that technique. However, the majority of massage therapists tend to use several techniques in their work and may place the emphasis of their practice on something other than technique. Massage therapists may work as self-employed practitioners in private or group offices, or as salaried or commissioned employees, or independent contractors. Earnings vary widely, depending on variables such as the area of the country, type of practice, skills, and experience.

Program Description
This program presents a complete and comprehensive study of Western and Eastern Therapeutic Massage in addition to many complimentary modalities and therapies. The major areas of studies also include science, health awareness, business and clinical internship. The program is designed to give students an excellent understanding of human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and pathology. This thorough understanding of the human body will enable the massage therapist to effect positive change in their clients. In addition, students will gain knowledge in appropriate body mechanics, nutrition, and movement therapies such as yoga, qi gong, pilates and tae-bo. This will ensure not only longevity of the therapist in the practice but will also provide the therapist with excellent treatment tools for client homecare. Business knowledge is critical to the success of any therapist. Knowledge in areas such as entrepreneur skills, marketing, advertising, and networking are vital. Therapists will be given useful practical business information by successful therapists in practice.

Scope of Practice
The scope of practice for licensed massage therapists varies from city to city, state to state and in Canada from province to province. In the State of Arizona massage therapy is defined as the manual application of compression, stretch, vibration or mobilization of the organs and tissues beneath the dermis including the components of the musculoskeletal system, peripheral vessels of the circulatory system and fascia, when applied primarily to the parts of the body other than the hands, feet and head. To practice massage therapy in Arizona requires a State license. Legislation is changing rapidly for this quickly growing industry, for the most updated information on licensure in Arizona contact the State of Arizona Board of Massage Therapy at 1400 West Washington, Suite# 230 Phoenix, Arizona 85007 (602) 542-8604 or visit their website at http://massagetherapy.az.gov.
