An integral part of your education at NAMTI includes the study and practice of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Yoga, and Meditation, giving students the opportunity to further explore self awareness, growth, and ancient studies of the east that can enhance their therapeutic treatments. We focus on assisting the development of each student’s ability to internalize, express, and practice the art of all therapeutic techniques studied.
All programs and courses at NAMTI are instructed by highly qualified, competent, and experienced individuals currently active in the health care and/or therapeutic massage and bodywork field. Our programs meet and exceed all standards of approved for National Certification, as well as State Licensure in Arizona and many other states. MASSAGE PRACTITIONERS PROGRAM
[840 hours]
This program solidifies a foundation of education and experience for an individual to begin working professionally as a massage therapist. Studies include a variety of massage modalities, and both the scientific and artistic studies pertaining to massage therapy. Students will receive high quality instruction and insight from trained professionals where individual style and expression of massage is emphasized. A comprehensive amount of time is spent with supervised practice, and students will also gain experience working in the student clinic and in the community. Graduates are eligible for National Certification and state licensure depending on the exact requirements of each individual state..
Prerequisites: High School Diploma or Equivalent (G.E.D.) and must be 18 years of age or older.
Qualifications: Upon graduation students are eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam, Licensure Exams in many states, professional certified massage therapists, and a variety of professional memberships available!

COURSES
Deep Tissue Techniques (201A):
Students will progress through the traditional Swedish massage protocols and then transition into more specific deep tissue techniques to enhance your abilities to treat various muscular conditions that will be present in your clients. Body mechanics will be emphasized to ensure your personal health and maintenance throughout your career. Specific musculoskeletal conditions are considered and students will become confident in working through the entire body with a variety of strokes and techniques that are necessary.
Anatomy and Physiology (101):
Anatomy and Physiology offers an exciting and interactive examination into the structure and function of the human body. Lessons are focused around the understanding of concepts that will allow students to gain insight into the fascinating inner-workings of the human body. The neuromuscular system is outlined as to prepare for further analysis and study throughout the program. Students will learn the musculoskeletal system and become competent in their abilities to perform practical location, palpation, and stretching practices.
Kinesiology for Bodyworkers(102):
This extremely valuable course integrated into the Massage Practitioner's Program is unlike any other Kinesiology course you will find in massage certification programs in the country! Specific massage techniques are studied and practiced to release patterns of chronic pain and limitation of movement, realign posture and gait, improve athletic performance, and enhance the body's innate ability to achieve wellness are learned and practiced. Students will also learn therapeutic exercise and stretching applications for which they can guide their clients and patients along with self treatment massage techniques.
Pathology (103):
Pathology is an interactive course that investigates a wide variety of health conditions commonplace in today’s society, and in particular those that massage therapists and bodyworkers commonly work with in practice. Studies will focus on the origins, signs and symptoms, and traditional medical treatments of disease and musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. The positive affects that therapeutic massage and bodywork offer are then considered and developed. This course is invaluable to practitioners, as they will face these conditions first hand as a professional.
Business Skills (150):
To be a successful professional in today’s world requires certain basic knowledge and skills. This course provides excellent interactive instruction about the many facets of the massage therapy business. These classes teach the practical side of owning and running a small business. They include exercises to determine whether private practice is viable for the student, guidance in starting up a business, an introduction to creating a business plan, marketing and advertising suggestions, tax tips, and most importantly, a list of many resources the therapist can use in starting a business. By the end of this course, a student should have a good outline of how to open a private massage practice. Even if the goal of the student is to work in a spa, there are practical suggestions on how to create a good resume to get the job and practical suggestions for people working under contract.
Professional Ethics of Massage (151):
Integrated into the Massage Practitioners Program, this course that looks at the origins and current settings of massage therapy. Discussions are held regarding proper etiquette to be practiced among professional massage therapists, and draping and respect of clientele are analyzed. Students will take away from this course the insight and motivation to explore the many possibilities and responsibilities professional massage therapists have in the health care field.
Traditional Thai Massage I:
In the Level 1 training students are introduced to the ‘front body’ Thai Massage protocol. This protocol also includes some techniques for the back and head. Students learn techniques for initiating energy movement through the body. Thai meridians, main energy lines, pressure points and techniques for facilitating the body’s physical, psychological, and spiritual balance are presented. Deeply focused abdominal work is included in this level. Overall, the Level 1 training introduces the student to the system of Thai Massage, its basic moves, and how the practitioner smoothly transitions from one technique to the next.
Swedish Massage (201):
This course explores the fundamental skills of massage therapy. It serves to orient practitioners in training to become comfortable and familiar in human therapeutic touch, as well as to solidify a foundation that will continually be added to throughout your career. The theory and practice of traditional Swedish massage as well as deep tissue and connective tissue techniques are taught incorporating many communication skills that are practiced to enhance the therapists rapport and effectiveness with their clients.
ProprioSomatic Therapy I (PST I) (202):
This bodywork modality offers an in depth systematic approach towards gaining optimal muscle tone and postural balance throughout the entire musculoskeletal system. Students will learn how to thoroughly work with trigger points in the muscle tissue, and students will gain a knowledgeable and practical foundation for which to begin their practice of working with the neuro-muscular systems of the body. The MusculoEnergetic Release Techniques are then introduced which enhance the sensitivity of the practitioners in their abilities to assist the client in achieving a more optimal state of comfort in the body.
Basic Sports Massage (203):
Whether your clientele is comprised of individuals participating in athletics or regular exercise, you will need to be confident in performing the techniques that Sports Massage offers. This course includes lecture, demonstration and supervised practice. The use of appropriate hydrotherapy techniques in the form of both hot and cold applications are introduced. Students will experience these treatments as a practitioner as well as a client to fully embody the understanding of such a modality. The appropriate timing of different techniques used in Sports Massage are analyzed will solidify a basis for which students can further study the theory and application involved in the Advanced Sports Massage Training offered at NAMTI, where practical experience is gained in working with Division I college athletics!
BioDynamic CranioSacral Therapy I:
"The Midline": This first level focuses on understanding the role of Midline in Biodynamic Therapy, in the Embryo and Culture. A variety of interactive instruction includes Somatic mediations, table work and exercises to enhance and embody these understandings. Using Biodynamic skills of presence, perception, and neutral to work within the fluid model is integral with instruction and supervised and guided practice. A complete understanding of the fluid model- tidal body, fluid body and soma is accomplished in this course.
Shiatsu (204):
Shiatsu covers the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoist philosophy and meridian theory. Practical application of Shiatsu techniques allows practitioners to develop hour long full body Shiatsu treatments. This course will solidify a foundation for which students can pursue further advanced study in Shiatsu treatments and Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy and instruction as well.
Basic Reflexology (205):
Basic reflexology explores the history and philosophy of reflexology and pertains to the reflexology patterns on the feet. Practical application of reflexology addresses a full hour session and gives the practitioner a way to incorporate reflexology into a Swedish Massage. Students can continue their studies and fulfill requirements to become a certified reflexologist as well!
Fundamentals of TuiNa (209):
This class covers the fundamental principles and practices of TuiNa. Students will be instructed in basic QiGong exercise and the history and basic principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) such as Yin/Yang; Five Element Theory; Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids; and the “Four Pillars” of diagnosis – Inspection, Auscultation and Olfaction (listening and smelling), Inquiry, and Palpation. Most importantly, the practical hands-on component of the class will cover the proper therapeutic application of approximately 20 TuiNa hand techniques including Rolling (Gun), Pushing (Tui), Brushing (Mot), Grasping (Na), and Pressing (An) among others.
CranioSacral Therapy (212):
Here is your opportunity to sample The Upledger Institute’s CranioSacral Therapy (CST) workshop studied by more than 40,000 healthcare practitioner’s worldwide. Developed by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM, CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s natural healing processes to improve the operation of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health and strengthen resistance to disease. Students will also receive a certificate from the Upledger Institute in addition to their work at NAMTI, and will be ready for further CranioSacral Therapy studies.
Herbal & Homeopathic Studies (207):
This course is designed to present the basics of Herbal Medicine to the beginning student, with applications for personal health and professional practice. Classes will introduce Herbal Medicine both as a systems approach and a holistic paradigm. The contents will include a brief history of Herbal Medicine, the energetics and properties of herbs, and which herbs are appropriate for various organ systems. How to make and use infusions, tinctures, slaves and compresses with a primary focus on how to use them in a massage therapy practice is emphasized. Participants can expect to acquire a well-rounded foundation in Herbal Medicine as an adjunct to Massage Therapy, and as a foundation for future study.
HydroTherapy Applications (208):
Hydrotherapy is the various applications of water, used as a therapeutic tool. In this course students will learn how to effectively enhance their treatments with such practices. A major focus of this course is also to learn and practice skills in providing a variety of spa treatments that include mud baths, salt glows, several body wraps, hot stone treatments, and more! The various practices learned in this course are those popularly offered by spas throughout the country, and possessing such skills will make graduating students qualified to become employed in such settings.
Student Massage & Bodywork Lab (250):
The student clinic at NAMTI presents live interaction and practice with all phases of operating a successful massage practice. Students will gain the experience they need in this course by practicing their business and therapeutic skills with the general public in a professional and supervised setting. This course is designed to thoroughly prepare students to enter the marketplace as competent and experienced individuals!

The study and practice of Tai-Chi is integral to all programs at NAMTI. With a focused approach to understanding and sensing how one’s internal energies can be harnessed, practitioners can begin to see the full potential that we all have to be the most effective in the therapeutic treatments we administer. At NAMTI we believe that in order to fully reach one's potential as a therapeutic practitioner, time needs to be spent on bringing your own self to an optimal level of well-being; and this course serves to provide you with a foundation of practice in these internal martial arts that will help you achieve continual progress in this domain.
