Therapeutic Bodywork Learning Center of Maine

Mission Statement of the Massage Therapy Local Trainer (LT) Program

Donna Kraft-Smith, L.M.T. (Instructor)
It is my intention to work along side the missions of "The Myotherapy Institute of Utah", especially to "assist the holistic health care student in his/her quest for excellence in technique & knowledge."
It is my mission to bring forth a quality educational apprenticeship experience for the student, utilizing the program and materials set forth by the Myotherapy Institute of Massage (MIM), and my own expertise as a Massage Therapist.

It is my intention to create another avenue of study and licensure qualification through home study, small hands-on classes, and clinical experience for those interested in learning Therapeutic Bodywork.

Note: Though MIM and Donna Kraft-Smith, LMT are connected with the common purpose of the Local Trainers (LT) Program, they are not legally affiliated in any way, and each have their own requirements, policies and tuition. Each is in no way legally responsible for the other's portion of the program.

The Local Trainer Program

How It Works
This program is licensed through the Department of Maine Education. The Local Trainer (LT) program often works in cooperation with the MYOTHERAPY INSTITUTE OF MASSAGE (MIM) to provide a quality training in therapeutic bodywork. Maine requires that you must have 500 hours or more of professional massage training. The LT program consists of 300 hours, more or less, of your needed hands-on supervised training following specific requirements as outlined in the LT manual. Your instructor records your attendance and evaluates your performance in applying technique. All records are sent to MIM. In addition to the tuition to their instructor for the training, students should be prepared to pay a separate fee to MIM. Classes are small with a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 10.

The Facility
The facility is located on 185 Harlow Street, Suite 2, downtown Bangor, ME (Donna's office where she sees her clientele). The classroom is approximately 500 square feet of open space with a massage table, chairs, sink, hydrocollator, chalkboard, wall charts, Manikin, body cushion, lending library of books and video/audio tapes, and TV/VCR. The room has been inspected by the Department of Maine Education, Department of Health and The Bangor Fire Department and is approved for up to 10 students.

Hands-on instruction
Works closely with MIM's academic portion of the curriculum. Students determine on onset of course how many hours are needed to acquire their educational goals. Hours needed for hands-on portion are determined by the local training customized program signed up for. The following curriculum is available in whole or in part to coincide with MIM's distance education. Hours mentioned below are for the entire LT program of 300 hours of hands-on training. See MIM's catalog addendum for a fuller explanation of customized LT programs of 50 to 250 hours for those students who may have some previous training in touch therapy. All students must pass according to MIM's standards. Students are given practical evaluations by the local trainer. A letter grade (based on the same scale as MIM's written tests) is given based on the ability to understand and apply the techniques taught. Students must maintain a "C" (2.0) or above to pass.

(2 hr.) Contraindications - Students are expected to know precautionary conditions and complete contrary health situations to massage therapy. They learn to retrieve this information by learning the proper questions to ask on the initial phone call, how to create and take an initial intake form, keep client records, and how to observe for contraindications.

(20 hr.) Sports Massage - The focus is to help with pre-event and post-event activities on athletes and instruction on injury pathology.

(10 hr.) Low Back Techniques - Low back techniques that are great to incorporate into the Swedish massage or a more shortened localized massage.

(10 hr.) Infant/Pregnancy/Geriatric Massage - The student gains an understanding of benefits, contraindications and how to apply technique and pressure in each situation.

(20 hr.) AcuTherapy - Light touch techniques that are great for the client who has an issue with disrobing or for those extra tight muscles that a deeper tissue massage is not appropriate for.
