Welcome to the Lakewood School of Therapeutic Massage
Lakewood School teaches therapeutic application and the science of massage and bodywork as well as the art and spirit of the practice. There is an emphasis on professional development and an atmosphere of personal growth.
Our school is located in a historic district of Port Huron, Michigan where Lake Huron and the St. Clair River meet. The Blue Water Bridge links Port Huron, Michigan with Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
The professional training is a 600 contact hour, state licensed program that grants graduates the title of Massage Therapist. Students are prepared to sit for the National Certification Board Exam that is optional and encouraged. The program is a 10-½ month program that begins in January and August.
Core Curriculum Courses
Anatomy and Physiology 151 Hours
We offer a college level Anatomy course with a Kinesiology component. We cover all the systems of the body and we study, in depth, the major muscles of the body; their location, function, and action.
Professional Development 76 Hours
This course includes numerous topics pertinent to the massage practitioner other than techniques. Some of the topics covered are practice management, ethical implications, professional relationships, scope of practice, and self care for the practitioner.
Massage Theory and Techniques< 151 Hours
In the first trimester of this course, students will learn Swedish Techniques along with variations and combinations of the basic massage strokes which provide the foundation for all other applications. In addition, Range of Motion techniques are introduced.
Second and third trimesters students learn therapeutic massage techniques which provide restorative and corrective measures for the client with alterations of optimal functioning. Some of the techniques taught include Proprioceptive Muscular Facilitation, Advanced Stretching, Lymphatic Techniques, Assessment and advanced Palpation Skills.
Supplemental Program 96 Hours
Supplemental Courses are seminar style classes that include a Wellness series, where students will gain an awareness of higher levels of self care and learn about a holistic approach to wellness. Also in this series are professional development courses such as Pathology and Ethics, as well as Hydrotherapy.
Student Clinic 46 Hours
Student Clinic is an on-site clinical experience where students practice their skills with clients from the public in a supervised setting.
Some of the Student Clinic experience is out in the community in a variety of settings. This increases the types of supervised clinical experiences the students have, and serves our community.
Workshop Electives 80 Hours
Workshop electives are provided so students can explore bodywork modalities that are complimentary to massage and may be incorporated in a massage session. This adds to the eclectic approach of our program, and allows students to expand their coursework in areas of their particular interest.
