Swedish Institute College in New York
Massage Therapy Program
Founded in 1916, the Swedish Institute has the oldest Massage Therapy Program in the country. While the idea of using one's hands as a therapeutic agent of change has only recently received attention from the scientific community, throughout its history the Swedish Institute has endeavored to preserve the integrity of this ancient healing art, while also developing standards of practice to meet the demands of modern times.
Our program is registered with and regulated by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Successful completion of the course of study qualifies graduates who meet all other state requirements to sit for the New York State licensing examination in massage therapy.
Graduates of our Massage Therapy Program are eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam (NCE) given by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).
The mission of the Massage Therapy Program is to educate students in the science and art of Massage Therapy so they will be effective, ethical and successful massage therapists who become lifelong learners, serve their communities and advance the profession of massage therapy.
Curriculum
The Swedish Institute offers a dynamic curriculum that develops strong skills in both Western and Eastern styles of massage, a solid knowledge base in the biosciences, and an emphasis on integration of these components into practical applications in classes and clinics.
Foundation
The study of anatomy, physiology and pathology provides students with the foundation needed to develop confident therapeutic skills. Students study and practice Swedish massage and gradually integrate advanced Western modalities such as sports massage, myofascial techniques and trigger point therapy. Clinical strategies, assessment, business and ethics courses are also an important part of their professional development.
Eastern Studies
Five-Element Shiatsu provides an Eastern perspective which emphasizes the flow of Qi, or energy, through the body. Students are also introduced to additional Eastern techniques such as Tuina, Sotai and Thai massage. Eastern and Western modalities are integrated throughout the program and students incorporate both approaches into their clinical work.
