Massage Training
The State of Oregon requires a minimum of 500 hours of training with 200 hours allocated to health sciences and 300 to massage. The health sciences training includes Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology and Pathology. The massage hours include Swedish Massage, Hydrotherapy, Communications, Ethics, Business, Clinical Practice and Sanitation. Oregon uses the National Certification Exam (NCE/NLE) as the written portion of their licensing requirements. A practical Exam must also be taken in order to become licensed.

Oregon School of Massage offers two programs which meet the above requirements:
Western Massage Focus Program
Eastern Massage Focus Program

Massage Training with a Western Focus
Most massage therapy practiced in the United States is based in Swedish or western massage. This can be described as the use of various strokes to manipulate soft tissues, engaging the muscular, cardiovascular and nervous systems in order to reduce tissue tightness, enhance circulation, reduce pain and promote general relaxation. Practitioners usually work directly on the client's skin, using various lubricants.

Western Massage Focus students take 180 hours of hands-on classes concentrated on learning Swedish massage technique. This is the basic field of study covered in the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists practical examination. 210 hours of training are devoted to the health sciences. The remainder of classes encompass practice development skills and 70 hours of electives.

The program has been approved by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists and the Washington Department of Health Board of Massage. OSM is approved by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for training certification and as a continuing education provider.

Massage Training with an Eastern Focus
Eastern massage is the compression and movement of tissue, using hand techniques different than those in Western massage. These techniques are applied to the body following the meridian system (from Traditional Chinese Medicine). The intended benefits are generally the same as for Western massage, but viewed more in terms of achieving a greater balance of energy. Clients remain fully clothed during Eastern massage sessions.

Oregon School of Massage is the only school in the Northwest to offer training in Eastern massage therapy that meets all the requirements for licensure.

The program has been approved by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists and the Washington Department of Health Board of Massage. OSM is approved by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for training certification and as a continuing education provider.
