Medical Careers Institute
Massage Therapy AAS degree at Richmond and Newport News campuses
The goal of our Massage Therapy program is to take a qualified student with minimal or no knowledge of anatomy and produce a confident, well-educated therapist capable of collaborating with other healthcare providers in the medical field.
The program curriculum has been designed to thoroughly prepare students for an entry-level career in therapeutic massage as a Certified Massage Therapist. The Massage Therapy program teaches the art and science of massage therapy while focusing on the medical and rehabilitative effects of massage. The program is designed to teach sound business practices thus preparing students for success in the workplace. With the integration of clinical experience and hands-on work through externship, this curriculum will provide the students with an opportunity to see care as it is given to patients/clients in all stages of health (acute, chronic, and rehabilitation) and participate in their healing process.
Upon completion of the program, a student earns an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Science with a major in Massage Therapy. Graduates may then apply to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) to take the National Certification Exam.
After passing the NCE, students may apply to the Virginia Board of Nursing for certification as massage therapists in the Commonwealth of Virginia, permitting them to practice therapeutic massage and treatment within their scope of practice.
As a Certified Massage Therapist, a vast range of employment opportunities are available to students. As therapists, they may own and manage private clinics or select from chiropractic clinics, medical and health centers, spas, private physicians offices, nursing homes, professional and amateur sports teams, fitness institutes, and private industry.
